How to Obtain a Vehicle License in Nigeria

The process of obtaining a vehicle license in Nigeria can vary slightly depending on the state and specific regulations. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it’s advisable to consult official sources such as the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) or the State Board of Internal Revenue/Motor Licensing Authority.

Applying for a vehicle license in Nigeria involves the following steps:

Step 1: Obtain a Roadworthiness Certificate
Before applying for a vehicle license, your vehicle must be inspected to ensure it meets road safety standards. Visit a Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) to get your Roadworthiness Certificate (RWC).

Step 2: Obtain Third-Party Insurance
Vehicle owners must obtain at least a third-party insurance policy from a licensed insurance provider. This is mandatory under Nigerian law.

Step 3: Pay for Vehicle License Fees
You can pay the required vehicle licensing fees through the following methods:

  • Online via the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) portal or the State Licensing Authority website (where applicable).
  • Physically at the Motor Licensing Office (MLO).

Step 4: Submit Required Documents
After payment, submit the following documents at the Motor Licensing Office (MLO):

  • Roadworthiness Certificate
  • Insurance Certificate
  • Proof of ownership of the vehicle
  • Valid Identification (Driver’s License, National ID, or Passport)
  • Payment receipt for vehicle license fees

Step 5: Receive Your Vehicle License
Once all documents are verified, the licensing office will issue your Vehicle License and sticker, which must be displayed on your vehicle.
