How to Share Airtime on MTN in Nigeria

Imagine you have a big bowl of jollof rice, and your friend is sitting next to you, staring at you with hungry eyes. You have more than enough, so why not share? That’s exactly how sharing airtime on MTN works! You have some, they need some, and with just a few steps, you can help them out.

MTN has a feature called MTN Share (previously known as Share ‘N’ Sell), which allows you to transfer airtime from your balance to another MTN user. It’s quick, simple, and works like a charm every time.

Step 1: Change Your Default PIN (Very Important!)

Before you start transferring airtime, MTN requires you to set a unique PIN. This is like a security lock to make sure nobody else can send airtime from your phone without your permission.

How to Change Your MTN Share PIN

Imagine your PIN is like the password to your phone’s lock screen—you don’t want just anybody to have access. The default PIN on every MTN line is 0000, but you need to change it to something only you know. Here’s how:

  1. Dial *600*Default PIN*New PIN*New PIN#
    • Example: If you want to change it to 1234, dial *600*0000*1234*1234#
  2. Or you can do it via SMS:
    • Send an SMS in this format: “0000 1234 1234” to 321
    • MTN will send you a confirmation message that your PIN has been changed.

Boom! Your PIN is now set, and you’re ready to transfer airtime.

Step 2: Transfer Airtime Like a Pro

Now that your PIN is set, you can share airtime with friends, family, or even your side hustle customers who need a quick top-up. There are two ways to do this: USSD code or SMS.

Method 1: Using USSD Code (The Quickest Way)

Think of this like dialing a number to check your airtime balance—it’s that easy.

  1. Dial *600*Recipient’s Number*Amount*PIN#
    • Example: To send ₦200 to 08031234567, dial *600*08031234567*200*1234#
  2. You’ll receive a message confirming that the transfer was successful.

That’s it! Your friend gets the airtime instantly.

Method 2: Using SMS (If You Prefer Texting)

If you’re more of a texter, you can send airtime using SMS as well.

  1. Open your messaging app and type this:
    • Transfer 08031234567 200 1234
  2. Send the message to 321
  3. MTN will ask you to confirm—just reply with YES.
  4. You’ll get a confirmation message, and your friend will receive the airtime.

Important Things to Know

Before you go on an airtime-sharing spree, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Minimum transfer amount: ₦50 per transaction.
  • Maximum transfer amount per transaction: ₦5,000.
  • Daily transfer limit: ₦100,000 (so don’t worry, you won’t run out too quickly!).
  • You can only transfer to MTN numbers—no Glo, Airtel, or 9mobile transfers.
  • You must have enough airtime balance before you can send airtime.
  • Transfers are final—once you send it, you can’t get it back, so double-check the number before confirming.

Why Should You Share Airtime?

Think about it: there’s always that one friend or sibling who suddenly runs out of airtime at the worst time—maybe they need to call a cab, place an urgent business call, or just text their crush. Instead of letting them suffer, you can be their hero by sending them some airtime in just a few seconds.

Or maybe you’re running a small business and want to reward a loyal customer with airtime. This feature makes it easy!
