Trump’s New Proposed Travel Ban Targets 43 Countries; Nigeria Not Included

The Trump administration is implementing a new travel ban affecting citizens from 43 countries, citing national security concerns over passport security and insufficient traveler data sharing.

The restrictions categorize countries into three tiers:

  • Red List: 11 countries facing full visa suspensions, including Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen.
  • Orange List: 10 countries, such as Belarus, Eritrea, Haiti, Laos, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, and Turkmenistan, facing partial visa suspensions, primarily affecting tourist, student, and certain immigrant visas, with exceptions for specific categories like wealthy business travelers.
  • Yellow List: 22 countries, including Angola, Benin, Cameroon, and Zimbabwe, given 60 days to address security deficiencies or face potential visa restrictions.

Notably, Nigeria is absent from all three lists, marking a departure from previous U.S. travel bans where it was included. The decision to exclude Nigeria has surprised some observers, especially considering past sanctions and discussions about security concerns.

The proposed policy is pending final approval and may undergo changes before implementation. Critics argue that such broad restrictions could strain diplomatic relations and question the criteria for country selection.
